Surviving Overtures: A Guide

Overtures is a lot of fun but it’s also a ton of work.  Because we want this program to be the best experience possible for you, we’ve put together a list of things for you to keep in mind and to have in your bag so you're fully prepared for a rigorous two weeks of training.

things to bring

1.   Changes of clothes (you'll be sweating
a lot in your dance classes.)
2.   Appropriate face mask
3.   Water bottle

4.   Knee pads (not 100% necessary but you know your knees and we don't.)
5.   Dance shoes (jazz shoes)
6.   Notebook
7.   Pencil
8.   Recording device (your phone is fine.)
9.   Lunch each day and dinner (while there are several restaurants in the neighborhood, you will not have time for them. We do have a fridge and microwave though! And a grocery store next door.)
10.   An open mind
11. A willingness to learn and support
your fellow students.

things you shouldn't bring

1.   A bad attitude
2.   A judgmental mindset
3.   A lack of sleep (Really, these aren't the weeks to be binging Netflix when you get home every night. Get home, put the phone away and go to bed. You'll be with us well over 100 hours over these two weeks.)
4.   Flip-flops. We really don't like them.
5.   Hunger. Eat before you get here in the morning.

Remember that you’ll get out of this program what you put into it. Whether that means making sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well or striving to keep a positive and productive mindset, every small effort will impact your Overtures experience.

Note: Signature Education wants you to have the best and most productive experience possible while at Overtures. If you have mental health struggles or physical challenges we should know about to help you succeed, please reach out at education@sigtheatre.org.
